There was a tomato plant near the compost heap that wouldn’t turn red.
It grew, sure. It thrived, even - tangles of leaves, a jungle of vines.
But every fruit stayed green. Hard. Stubborn. Proud.

The kids started calling it the rebel.

“It’s defective,” one of them said.

Patch shook their head.

“It’s deciding.

They left it alone.

No force-feed of fertilizer.
No lectures on “normal.”
No pruning to shame it into sweetness.

One child, Dani, took a liking to it.

“Maybe it’s just not ready,” they said one day, sitting cross-legged beside it. “I get that.”

Patch sat too.

“Some things bloom out of sync. That doesn’t mean they’re broken.”

So Dani waited. Whispered to it. Brought it shade in the heat, straw in the cold.

One day, without announcement, the fruit turned gold. Not red. Gold.

The kids gasped. Dani grinned like a sunrise.

“Told you it was just…different.”

They picked it. Shared it.

The flesh was sweeter than anything in the garden that day.

Patch carved a new sign for the trellis:

Ripeness is not obedience.

And underneath, someone had already written:
